A. Application
1. Can I apply for more than one course?
To prevent scheduling conflicts and ensure manageable workload for good learning outcomes, you are restricted to enrolling in just one of these courses: (a) Cantonese for non-Chinese speaking students, (b) Cantonese for Mandarin speaking students, or (c) Mandarin for non-Chinese speaking students.
2. I have studied Cantonese (or Mandarin) before. Is this course suitable for me?
The course that starts in January is aimed at beginners. The centre will arrange a placement test for non-beginners to determine their level and adjust the course accordingly. Note that there is also an Intermediate level course that starts in April.
3. How can I know if my online application has been successfully submitted?
You will receive the Application Form via email after submitting your Registration Form in the Applicaiton page. Please ensure your registered email address is accurate and valid.
4. What is the deadline of application?
The deadline for 2024/25 applications is December 18, 2024 (Wednesday). To apply, please fill in the Registration Form in the Applicaiton page.
B. Admission
5. What are the admission requirements?
Applicants must have completed at least senior secondary or high school education.
6. Is there an age limit for admittance to this programme?
As long as you meet the minimum educational requirement for admission (i.e. senior secondary/high school graduation), there is no age limit, and people from all walks of life are welcome to apply for the programme.
7. Can I apply for this programme if I hold a study visa and study in a local full-time programme other than that of HKU?
Please consult your home institution first, and apply for this programme only if no objection notification is received therefrom.
8. Can I apply for a non-local student visa if I am from places outside Hong Kong?
This programme is only open to Hong Kong residents, and we do not sponsor Hong Kong study visas.
9. I just received the admission offer from the Chinese Language Centre of the School of Chinese. How can I confirm my offer?
Please settle the tuition fees before the acceptance deadline. The admission offer to the Executive Programme in Chinese Language is confirmed upon payment of tuition fees.
C. Programme and class arrangement
10. Is the programme/course credit bearing?
The programme/course is non-credit bearing.
11. Is this programme included in the Qualifications Framework of the Hong Kong Education Bureau?
The language learning programme for public has been approved through a rigorous internal review by the Faculty of Arts of HKU. It is currently not registered under the Qualifications Framework of the Hong Kong Education Bureau.
12. What is the medium of instruction of the programme?
Classes are conducted in English, Putonghua and/or Cantonese. Lessons will be adjusted according to the course requirements and student composition in each class.
13. How many students are there in each class?
The maximum class size is 20-25 students.
14. Are there any attendance requirements?
If students wish to receive a certificate of completion or certificate of attendance issued by our centre (if applicable), they have to complete at least 80% of lessons.
15. Will I receive a certificate once I complete the programme?
The course has three terms with three levels, elementary, intermediate, and advanced. A formal certificate of completion is issued by the HKU Arts Faculty after completing the advanced level. If you only managed to complete elementary and/or intermediate, and have attended 80% of the classes, you may request a certificate of attendance from the Chinese Language Centre.
16. May I ask about the class arrangement during Bad Weather?

17. Can students of this programme use the HKU library?
Students of this programme are not eligible for using the HKU library services.
D. Tuition fee and payment
18. How do I make the payment for the tuition fee?
The payment for the tuition fee should be made by bank transfer only, and we don’t accept payment methods such as credit card or WeChat. The email notification will provide further payment details including means of transfer, whether bank in through ATM machine, visit a bank on-campus or through e-banking. Students should email your bank-in slip with the designated application number and full name to clc-execprog@hku.hk.
19. Is this programme approved for funding/subsidy by the HK Government Continuing Education Fund (CEF)?
The HK Government Continuing Education Fund (CEF) is not applicable to this programme.
20. Are there any financial support or scholarship opportunities available for this programme?
There is no financial support or scholarship available for this programme.
21. I have accepted the offer to your programme and have paid my tuition fee. However, I have changed my mind. Can I withdraw from the programme and get a refund?
The tuition fee paid is non-refundable and non-transferable.
