Mandarin for 
non-Chinese speaking students

This course is designed to the students who have no prior knowledge of Chinese. It aims to enhance students’ proficiency in all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing as well as Chinese word processing. It covers instruction in the pinyin system, pronunciation and basic sentence patterns to enable students to speak sentences accurately, clearly, and fluently, engage in basic conversations, and discuss simple topics. Listening comprehension training focuses on the ability to distinguish sounds and tones and comprehend short sentences. Additionally, the course includes instruction in basic character writing, covering various strokes, proper stroke order, and the mastery of 150 characters. Furthermore, students will learn word processing using pinyin, which is crucial for everyday communication on the internet and through mobile phone SMS.

2. Learn with Chinese experts: Receiving instruction, guidance, and insights from our well-experienced Chinese teachers who possess expertise in Chinese language, culture, or other related fields.

3. Teaching method: Employing diverse teaching approaches promotes cultural awareness and accommodates the students from diverse language and cultural backgrounds.

4. Learning mode: Providing various learning modes (in-person/online/hybrid) that are specifically designed to meet the needs of the students.

5. Community immersion and cultural enhancement:

5.1 developing an in-depth understanding of the community's traditions, values, and history by linking the curriculum to various in-class as well as outside-classroom activities as lectures on Chinese culture, exploring heritage sites in Hong Kong and etc.

5.2 40-minute Evening Social before class every Wednesday: Building strong and positive relationships with teachers and classmates.

5.3 Incorporating Student-Staff Partnership (SSP) approach into designing and/or organizing learning-support activities.
