Minor in Chinese Language and Culture

(for International Students and Non-Chinese Speaking Local Students)

The objective of the minor in Chinese Language and Culture (for International Students and Non-Chinese Speaking Local Students) is to offer a practical option to our students that will allow them broaden their avenues to academic and professional excellence and deepen their skill set for critical intellectual inquiry and lifelong learning. Focusing on the acquisition of language communication skills through content, the minor will contribute to fostering graduates who are communicative and innovative, ethically and culturally aware, and capable of tackling the unfamiliar with confidence.

Programme Structure
Students are required to take 6 courses (36 credits) from the following lists:

Notes:
1.    Students with prior qualifications in the Chinese language refers to students who already have a foundation in the Chinese language (Mandarin, Cantonese, or any one of the dialects of China). These prior qualifications could include Chinese language background, previous study or coursework in the Chinese language, such as speaking Chinese at home, completing a certain number of Chinese language courses (more than 80 contact hours), or passing a language proficiency test such as Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK), IB, AP, GCSE, etc.

2.   Students with prior knowledge of Chinese language on entering the minor programme are required to take an interview/test with the Programme Coordinator.  If lower level course exemption is granted, they will be required to take elective course(s) in Chinese language and culture in lieu of the exempted course(s) for the Minor to achieve the requisite 36 total credits
