Mandarin for 
non-Chinese speaking students

This course is designed for students who have successfully completed the Mandarin course offered in Term 1 or have demonstrated equivalent competence through the placement test. It aims to cultivate a solid foundation in the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, as well as to enhance students' linguistic output, progressing from the sentence level to the level of composing short paragraphs in both spoken and written forms. The course curriculum starts from daily life scenarios and gradually expanding to encompass broader cultural and societal topics. Through the use of carefully selected texts and different audiovisual media, students will develop a comprehensive understanding of contemporary Chinese culture and society.


Programme Features:


1. Outcomes-Based Approaches to Student Learning (OBASL): an approach to programme and course design, and to teaching and learning, that is focused upon what the students are expected to learn and to do, rather than what the teacher expects to teach and do. 2. Learn with Chinese experts: Receiving instruction, guidance, and insights from our well-experienced Chinese teachers who possess expertise in Chinese language, culture, or other related fields.

3. Teaching method: Employing diverse teaching approaches promotes cultural awareness and accommodates the students from diverse language and cultural backgrounds.

4. Learning mode: Providing various learning modes (in-person/online/hybrid) that are specifically designed to meet the needs of the students.

5. Community immersion and cultural enhancement:

5.1 developing an in-depth understanding of the community's traditions, values, and history by linking the curriculum to various in-class as well as outside-classroom activities as lectures on Chinese culture, exploring heritage sites in Hong Kong and etc.

5.2 40-minute Evening Social before class every Wednesday: Building strong and positive relationships with teachers and classmates.

5.3 Incorporating Student-Staff Partnership (SSP) approach into designing and/or organizing learning-support activities.
