Cantonese for 
non-Chinese speaking students

This course is designed for the students who have completed the Cantonese course offered in Term 1 or who can demonstrate equivalent competence through the placement test. It aims at strengthening students’ mastery of the phonetic romanization transcription, the Jyutping system, and at enhancing their competence in expressing themselves both orally in Cantonese and in writing short messages or speeches in Jyutping. The course will emphasise growth in oral communication and listening comprehension abilities through a wide variety of communication-based assignments such as show-and-tell sessions, journal presentations and phone calls. Practical sentence patterns and useful words and expressions for everyday life will also be introduced.


Programme Features:


1. 2. Learn with Chinese experts: Receiving instruction, guidance, and insights from our well-experienced Chinese teachers who possess expertise in Chinese language, culture, or other related fields.

3. Teaching method: Employing diverse teaching approaches promotes cultural awareness and accommodates the students from diverse language and cultural backgrounds.

4. Learning mode: Providing various learning modes (in-person/online/hybrid) that are specifically designed to meet the needs of the students.

5. Community immersion and cultural enhancement:

5.1 developing an in-depth understanding of the community's traditions, values, and history by linking the curriculum to various in-class as well as outside-classroom activities as lectures on Chinese culture, exploring heritage sites in Hong Kong and etc.

5.2 40-minute Evening Social before class every Wednesday: Building strong and positive relationships with teachers and classmates.

5.3 Incorporating Student-Staff Partnership (SSP) approach into designing and/or organizing learning-support activities.
